Department of Consumer Protection of Astana has conluded that people can swim only in one place in the Ishim (Yesil) River, Tengrinews reports.

Department of Consumer Protection made the statement after checking all the water reservoirs in Astana city.

"49 kilometres of the Yesil River and its Akbulak and Sarybulak waterways flow through Astana city. But there is only one place in the Yesil River that is suitable for swimming: the municipal sand beach in the city park that has the proper conditions and infrastructure for swimming (changing rooms, sunshades, sun loungers, attractions for children, and public toilets). It is advised not to swim in other places," the department told Tengrinews.

Astana sanitary inspectors checked the Yesil River in the beginning of the swimming season, organized cleaning of the coastal zone, the coast and the water surface, cut the cane in the coastal area. They take samples of water from the river every month from May to October and make microbiological, chemical, sanitary, parasitological and virological analysis of the water to make sure that it is safe for people.

The Department commented on the rumours that those attending the municipal beach were exposed to contracting head lice there. "Causes of pediculosis are rooted in violation of rules of personal hygiene", the Department said. "Not only people from underprivileged families where clean habits are often neglected are exposed to head lice. Moreover, it is easier for the insects to settle on clean hair - it makes it easier for them to drink blood and lay eggs. Head lice are spread through direct head-to-head contact with an infested person. So the lice threat comes from crowded places, where contact with infested people becomes more likely, especially if the rules of personal hygiene are not properly observed," the Department explains.
