Center for Life Sciences of Nazarbayev University is working on creation of an artificial child lung, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the university’s press-service. “One of the projects at Nazarbayev University in the field of regenerative medicine is to create an artificial child lung. Researches at the Center for Life Sciences have already developed a prototype of this device,” the message states. Second International Scientific Conference called Regenerative Medicine and Healthy Aging was held in Astana on November 1-2. The conference was organized by Nazarbayev University’s Life Sciences Center. “Regenerative medicine is now one of the most exciting areas in biomedical research as it offers a number of promising opportunities for the future treatment of diseases such as cancer, neurological diseases, injuries and degenerative diseases,” President of Nazarbayev University Shigeo Katsu said. Researches with the use of abdominal lymph nodes for reconstruction of the liver and pancreas in humans, as well as mesenchymal stem cells contained in tubular bones of hip joint are the current trends in the regenerative medicine. Nerve-point introduction of these cells can help improve the work of heart and other vital organs. “In the field of longevity medicine Nazarbayev University has launched a population-based study of people older than 50 years. The pilot study will start in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, and will involve 500 citizens. The population survey includes opinion polls, tests, and medical analysis. The study will give a general portrait of the average elderly citizen of Kazakhstan and help identify patterns of age changes in Kazakhstan. This will held determine to population's future genetic predisposition, age changes, and lifestyle habits, as well as develop social and economic scenarios of healthy aging of our citizens,” the press-service writes.
