Semey historians have finely identified the mysterious fossilized jaw that was almost forgotten in a school museum as an unknown object, Tengrinews reports.

A local historian Pavel Zhukov said that the piece was found by a student of the Public School #34 on the bank of Shulbinsk reservoir. The fossilized jaw was sent to the Institute of Zoology at the Science Academy of Kazakhstan in Almaty. “We were informed that the jaw belongs to a hipparion who is a forefather of a modern horse. This animal inhabited our region approximately 10 million years ago. It is a very valuable finding because such remains had not been found in our region before,” Zhukov explained.

At the moment the fossilized jaw is being restored. The bone is being cleansed from sand and other particles. “Hopefully, this summer an expedition from Almaty will come to Semey to study the place of the finding, ” the historian noted.
