Students from Almaty have assembled a robot that can identify sources of radiation and harmful gases, Tengrinews reports.

According to the inventors, sources of radiation are usually located in abandoned mines that are harmful for humans.

The project supervisor Assel Akzhalova said that two versions of the robot had been created. One of the robots was assembled for off-road manoeuvring, while the other one was created for even surfaces. The robots are fully autonomous thanks to their software. Temperature, humidity and dangerous gas concentration sensors are installed in the robots.

“We have studied abandoned mines in Karaganda Oblast. There is a possibility of reviving the mines. But it required a preliminary monitoring. The monitoring showed accumulation of radiation and methane that can cause conflagration,” Akzhalova said.

The prototype of the robots was presented at the 7th International Conference. Students also presented voice control household equipment. The invention was limited to commands “switch on”, “switch off”, “brightness up” and “brightness down”. According to Diyas Konurkulzhin, a student, the technology would be developed further to be used in smart houses.
