Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry has announced the agenda of the IV CONGRESS OF LEADERS OF WORLD & TRADITIONAL RELIGIONS to be held in Astana May 30-31, 2012, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing the Ministry’s spokesman Altai Abibullayev.

“The forum will focus on peace and accord as a conscious choice. Panel sessions will dwell on the role of religious leaders in forging sustainable development; religion and multiculturalism; religion and women; spiritual values and contemporary challenges; religion and youth”, Mr. Abibullayev elaborated.

According to him, 74 delegates from 30 countries, including Jordan's King Abdullah II; Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani of Qatar; Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia; Muslim World League Secretary-General Abdullah Al-Turki; UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova; Lutheran World Federation (LWF) General Secretary Rev. Martin Junge, and others have confirmed their participation.

Kazakhstan hosted the 3rd Congress of World Religions July 1-2 2009 in the Norman Foster-designed Palace of Peace & Accord in the capital, Astana. The Congress focused on the role of religious leaders in strengthening a world of tolerance against the backdrop of globalization.

The first two congresses were held in 2003 and 2006. Initiated by the country’s President, Nursultan Nazarbayev, both the 1st and 2nd Congress were devoted to strengthening understanding between religious and ethnic groups with the ultimate intention of preventing conflicts.
