Organizers of the international student exchange program Work & Travel may be obliged to bear responsibility for the safety of the program participants, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports citing director of the Consular Department of Kazakhstan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yryskali Daurenbek.

Daurenbek noted that he is planning to discuss this issue at the meeting with employees of U.S. Embassy. Daurenbek wants to suggest that organizers instruct students on behavior abroad. He added that about 3 thousand students leave Kazakhstan on Work & Travel program annually and face problems occasionally. Daurenbek gave an example of the case of Ainur Akhmetova.

Kazakhstan student Ainur Akhmetova went to the U.S. under Work & Travel program. On August 2 she was found unconscious in a hotel pool. She was in coma in American hospital for 3 weeks. August 21 Ainur was transported to Astana.

Tengrinews.kz English also reported about another Work & Travel student Kirill Denyakin. 26-year-old Karaganda citizen was shot by U.S. policeman Stephen D. Rankin in Portsmouth on April 23. Denyakin was unarmed, but the police officer made 11 shots killing him on the spot. Before the tragedy Denyakin had been working as a hotel cook for 2 years.
