Famous Kazakhstan singer and composer Aidos Sagat has been appointed first UN goodwill ambassador for refugees in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the public relations department of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

“Aidos Sagat has a vast experience of working with us and knows the mandate and the objectives of our organization very well. I would like to stress that, being a flagman of the independent Kazakhstan and possessing outstanding communication skills, he will inspire the minds and the hearts of different people, which will help a better understanding of the refugees’ problems,” UNHCR regional representative in Central Asia Saber Azam said.

Aidos Sagat has been cooperating with UNHCR as the Honorary Patron in Kazakhstan since November 2010 focusing on refugee children. He supported auxiliary musical and arts education of children. “I am very happy to become a goodwill ambassador of UHCR. I am confident that this will help to further channel my efforts into helping and supporting refugees in Kazakhstan. I know that refugees have difficult lives. Being subject to persecution, they are forced to leave their countries to save their lives and the lives of their children. As an Honorary Patron, I tried to change the lives of the refugee children for the better. I will continue these activities as a Goodwill Ambassador. Moreover, I also plan to raise awareness about the refugees and promote improvement of their conditions,” the leader of Urker band said.

Sagat’s appointment was timed to the World Refugee Day. “The recently published UNHCR's Global Trends Report says that there were over 45.2 million displaced persons in the world as of the end of 2012. For comparison, this number made 42.5 million people as of the end of 2011. This number includes 15.4 million refugees, 937 thousand asylum seekers and 28.8 million people displaced within their own countries. 46 percent of the total number of refugees are children under 18,” Saber Azam said.
