02 октября 2013, 19:49
The U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan will continue issuing visas to Kazakhstan citizen, the embassy’s press-service told Tengrinews. The embassy and the General Consulate continue their work, the diplomats say.

The issue of possible suspension of the operations of the Embassy and the Consulate and the possibility that the Embassy would not be able to continues issuing visas to Kazakhstan citizens was raised after the news of suspension of the financing of the U.S. federal services because of the government shutdown.

On August 1, 2013 the U.S. Consulate started issuing 5-year visas to Kazakhstan citizens. Kazakhstan has become the first country in Central Asia for the United States to introduce 5-year visas in. During the past 4 years Kazakhstan citizens applying for U.S. visas no longer had to come over to the embassy for interviews. All they needed was to mail their applications and documents. The visa procedures have not change with the change of the visa term and the consular fees were lowered to $160.

The U.S. Ambassador Kenneth J. Fairfax completed his mission in Kazakhstan not long ago. He is expected to be replaced by the ex-Ambassador to Kazakhstan John Ordway.

The Consul General to Kazakhstan also changed last months: Michael Snowden was replaced by Theresa Grenchik.
