Kazakhstan remains an information user rather than a development of its own media products. Moreover, our country is under risk of becoming an information colony, Director of Risks Assessment Group Dossym Satpayev told Tengrinews.kz.

"Some time ago Prime-Minister Karim Massimov admitted that almost 55 percent of Kazakhstan's population live in the Russian informational space, not in Kazakhstan's one. That means that almost half of Kazakhstan's population are looking at the situation in their country through the eyes of another country. In this connection we can say that there is a threat to the informational security of our country,” the expert said and gave an example of conflicts or disagreements of Russia with other Soviet states.

"Do you remember how Russia was actively using the informational resource to discredit acting powers in Georgia and Belarus? And now image if a similar conflict happens with our country. What will be our weapon that we will use in the information war with an enemy? Kazakhstan's media resources are not popular even among Kazakhstan residents. There are only two main options here. It is either state support for creation of a competitive media, as Qatar did with Al Jazeera, or state support for creation of a competitive environment in the country for development of all Kazakhstan's information players. The second option has more prospects, as it involves development of the whole information space of the country and not only certain tame media structures,” Satpayev explained.

If the media exists only with the subsidies from the state, Kazakhstan will get “greenhouse” media that will turn out to be noncompetitive on its own. The speaker called to promote development of commercial media, attract business into investmenting into the media and, the most important, to improve professionalism and social status of journalists, who have to be the fighters on the information front line and not “food for powder” in the inter-elite information wars.
