Russia says UN report on Iran contains nothing new

14 november 2011, 10:31
Russia on Wednesday said the UN nuclear watchdog's most detailed report on Iran to date contained no new information about its suspected weapons programme and relied on misconstrued facts, AFP reports.

"According to our first reading, the report does not contain fundamentally new information," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"We are talking about a compilation of well-known facts that are intentionally presented in a politicised manner," the ministry said in Russia's first official response to the contents of Tuesday's findings.

"It juggles information in order to form an impression that the Iranian nuclear programme has a military component," the statement said.

Russia noted that the same "indiscretion" by Western powers against former strongman Saddam Hussein led to the US-led invasion of Iraq.

Moscow's statement added that the only clear evidence submitted by the IAEA inspectors showed that Iran had improved the access it was affording to UN inspectors and was now willing to engage in direct talks.

"In the resulting difficult situation, we will continue pushing an approach that forms a constructive alternative to a policy of pressure and confrontation," the Russian statement said.
