Poll finds sinking US confidence in Washington

Nearly three-quarters of Americans now say they have little or no confidence in Washington to repair the US economy, AFP reports, citing a new poll, reflecting the deepening disenchantment as economic woes pile up.

Four in ten people polled by the Washington Post -- and almost half of independents -- said they had no confidence in the federal government in dealing with the economy.

The Post, which published the findings on its website late Wednesday, said confidence was down 21 percent from October 2010 and was less than half 2002 levels.

It comes amid worries about a double dip recession, wild stock market sell offs and a historic downgrade of the US credit rating that followed an ugly fight in Washington over the US debt.

The poll found that nearly eight in 10 Americans were dissatisfied with the way the political system is working, with 45 percent saying they were very disatisfied, the Post said.

More than 70 percent of those polled said Washington was focused on the "wrong thing," with Republicans and Democrats blaming each other and a plurality of independents (43 percent) saying both sides were to blame.

Nearly 80 percent had heard of the US credit downgrade by Standard & Poor's, and half agreed with the ratings agency, which took aim at the political gridlock in Washington.

The Post said blame appeared directly evenly at both political parties.

More people surveyed said President Barack Obama and the Republicans have made things worse, than said they had made progress.

Only 10 percent said the Republicans have made progress toward resolving problems, compared to 19 percent for Obama. Thirty-five percent said Republicans had made things worse, while 28 percent thought Obama had.

Obama's overall job rating was down to 44 percent approval and 46 percent disapproval, from 46 and 47 percent, respectively, three weeks ago.
