Nomination of Senate candidates completed in Kazakhstan

Nomination of candidates to Kazakhstan Senate finished at night of July 20, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports.

According to the agency, the candidates were nominated by Maslikhats (regional local authorities) and via self-nomination. Registration of candidates will last until July 29. Election campaigning may start on July 30 and continue until August 17. The elections are set for August 19.

16 Senate deputies will be elected: one from each of the 14 oblasts of Kazakhstan, plus one from Astana and Almaty each. Votes will be calculated and results will be announced by territorial election commissions on the same day, on August 19.

142 million tenge ($1 million) were allocated from the country budget for the Senate elections. The term of office of Senators is 6 years. Half of the Senate is re-elected every 3 years.

Earlier Tengrinews.kz English reported that a potential candidate has to pay registration fee of 239,985 tenge ($1,644). The amount will be paid back if the candidate is elected or receives not less than 5 percent of the votes.
