Nazarbayev discusses Ukraine and future partnership in innovations with Merkel

President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have discussed settlement of the Ukrainian crisis in the context of the possible meeting between the Heads of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France in Astana, Tengrinews reports citing the press office of Akorda. Nazarbayev and Merkel also talked about bilateral economic relations between Kazakhstan and Germany in the wake of the upcoming EXPO-2017.

During the meeting in Berlin, Nazarbayev and Merkel stressed the importance of following the Minsk protocol by all the parties involved for the soonest resolution of the conflict and strengthening of trust.

The leaders agreed that Kazakhstan and Germany were having a constructive political dialogue. They also dwelt on the agreement signed by Kazakhstan and Germany in February of 2012 on partnership in raw materials, industry and technologies.

President of Kazakhstan and German Chancellor considered expanding their countries' partnership in innovations and investments as part of the preparations for the International exhibition EXPO-2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Meanwhile, according to the press office of Kremlin, President Nazarbayev had previously talked with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone about settling the Ukrainian crisis.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko expressed readiness to participate in the meeting on January 15 in Astana.

"My diplomatic year begins on January 15 with a visit to Astana, where we will hold the Norman format meeting (Norman format refers to the meeting of Russian President, Chancellor of Germany, presidents of France and Ukraine)," he said. Kazakhstan confirmed readiness to hold negotiations on Ukrainian crisis on January 15-16 or any other time convenient for the parties involved.
