President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has congratulated the citizens of Kazakhstan on the 68th anniversary of the Victory, Tengrinews.kz reports. He laid flowers on Otan Korgaushylar monument in Astana and honored the Kazakh soldiers who died in the Great Patriotic War with a minute of silence. For post soviet countries, with Kazakhstan being one of them, the Great Patriotic War is the period from 22 June 1941 to 9 May 1945 when the countries fought on many fronts of the eastern campaign of World War II between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany with its allies. There is a difference between the Great Patriotic War term and the World War II, as the term denotes only the war between Germany and its European allies, and the Soviet Union. The war with Japan (including the invasion of Manchuria) and the war on the Western front are not referred to by this term. Nor does it cover the Soviet Union's 1939 attacks on Poland, Finland, the 1940 invasion of the Baltic states, or the 1941 invasion of Iran. “I congratulate all the citizens of Kazakhstan in this great holiday, the Victory Day. The further this day goes down into the past, the greater its significance becomes. The war veterans are becoming fewer among us every year and the more respect and honor we should give them. They demonstrated heroism, solidarity and unity. This day is the Day of Truth for many generations whose grandfathers, fathers and mothers were fighting at the frontlines or working in rearward areas to bring this Victory closer. This great holiday teaches us that unity of a nation, peace and political stability is what matters most,” the President of Kazakhstan said in his speech. Nursultan Nazarbayev reminded that about 1.8 million citizens of Kazakh Republic participated in the Great Patriotic War and half of them never retuned home from the front. He called Kazakhstan citizens to treasure the peace the country enjoys now: “There are a lot of reports from various frontlines these days. Explosions in Iraq that kill 50 people are followed by bombings in Syria and elsewhere. There has been peace, friendship and accord in our country during the days of Kazakhstan’s independence. We should treasure this and the experience of the past wars shows.” Nazarbayev continued with wishing the veterans good health and expressed hope to see them at the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory. According to the press-service of Astana Akimat (municipal authorities), there are 291 war veterans registered in Astana: 215 participants and 76 war disabled veterans.
