Nursultan Nazarbayev has spoken about common elements of various world religions at the V Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Astana, Tengrinews reports.

"The phenomenon of stability, preservation of influence of religious teachings in the age of technological revolutions was very accurately explained by XX century Italian writer Cesare Pavese. He wrote that religion is a belief that everything that happens to us is extremely important. That is why it will always exist. But does this mean that human development will invariably be tied to religious differences, hostility, conflict, sectarian war? I do not think so," Nazarbayev declared.

"According to Mahatma Gandhi, God has no religion. &ldquoOur church walls do not reach the skies," famous XIX century philosopher Plato Gorodetsky said. The thousand-year history of theological debates - they were only verbal disputes until politicians turned them into wars and conflicts," the Kazakh President said.

Nazarbayev stressed that all religions of the world were calling for restraint, patience, non-violence and harmony. "The Holy Qur'an says that killing one person is tantamount to killing all mankind and that one should think about peace for all mankind and be at peace with all men. The Christian New Testament contains a similar appeal. Ancient Indian Upanishads call for responsibility for all human acts: "When a blade of grass is ripped &ndash the universe shudders." True faith is only that which motivates a person for love, compassion and kindness. It is an enduring and eternal truth," he said.

According to him, in the foreseeable future ethnic, linguistic, religious and cultural differences will remain. Which means that people should look for ways of tolerance, patience and respect for each other, he said.

"I agree with Pope Francis, who said 'that which unites us - is much greater than that which divides us'. I am sure that inter-ethnic, inter-religious conflicts are caused by erroneous policies, which destroy countries, people and societies. Today, we see it happen in different parts of the world. But mutual attraction of people, mutual desire to learn each others languages, cultures, spiritual world, to develop trade and good neighborly relations are lingering things. Spiritual political leaders can work together to make the world more wholesome and tolerant," he said.
