Kazakhstan's Akhmetov taking part in CSTO summit in Sochi

Kazakhstan Prime-Minister Serik Akhmetov is participating in the meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Sochi, Tengrinews reports citing the Prime-Minister's official website.

“Prime-Minister Serik Akhmetov has left for Sochi to take part in the meeting of the Collective Security Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization,” the message states.

Delegations of Kazakhstan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Tajikistan and Armenia have gathered fir the meeting to discuss the CSTO's further development.

According to the press-service of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the highlights of meeting’s agenda are: protection of the member-states’ borders in the context of withdrawal of the coalition forces from Afghanistan in 2014 and CSTO's priorities during the Russian chairmanship (the chairmanship will be passed from Kyrgyzstan to Russia during the today's meeting).

The meeting of the Collective Security Council is expected to result in signing a range of documents on enhancement of the military cooperation of CSTO member-countries and management of the collective forces. A communique is to be adopted at the end of the summit.

Before the today's summit Kazakhstan Prime-Minister Serik Akhmetov visited the Olympic facilities in Sochi. He has been to Bolshoy Ice Palace, Adler-Arena Indoor Skating Center and Iceberg Ice Sports Palace. The Prime-Minister liked the quality of the sports facilities and the large scale of the projects.

“I am impressed with the scale of the Sochi’s preparations for the Olympics. I have no doubts that the Games will be held at a high level. I wish you success in holding the Winter Olympics,” Akhmetov said.

The 22nd Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi on February 7-23, 2014.
