Kazakhstan supports UN efforts to stop violence in Syria

Official Astana shares the concerns over the situation in North African and Middle Eastern countries and expresses support to the UN Human Rights Council in its efforts to stop escalation of violence in these regions, Tengrinews.kz reports citing press-service of Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry. Today, July 11, Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov met with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay in Almaty. During the meeting the parties discussed several issues, including Kazakhstan’s performance of the obligations on human rights, cooperation with the Regional Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for Central Asia, as well as implementation of the National Human Rights Action Plan and national tortures preventive mechanism. Speaking of the current issues of contemporary international relations, Kazykhanov noted that Astana shares the concern of the global community of the situation in North African and Middle Eastern countries, Syria in particular. “Chairing the Foreign Ministers Council of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Kazakhstan supports settlement of the situation in Syria, as well as resolution of the humanitarian crisis in several countries of the region,” Minister said. The parties also discussed Kazakhstan as a candidate for participation in the UN Human Rights Council in 2013-2015.
