Kazakhstan may become a member of the UN Human Rights Council, the organization’s official website writes.

Kazakhstan presented itself as a candidate for membership in the UN Human Rights Council from Asian-Pacific States for 2013-2015. The voting will be held at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.

The international human rights institution of the UN system was established on March 15, 2006 and replaced the Human Rights Commission. The Council has 47 member-states. Each member is elected for 3 years and none of them can hold the membership for two terms in a row. The seats are distributed between the regional UN groups as follows: 13 seats for African states, 13 for Asian states, 6 for Eastern European states, 8 for Latin American and Caribbean states and 7 seats for Western European and other states.
