Kazakhstan businesses can find niches at African markets, Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Yerlan Idrissov is quoted by Tengrinews as saying.

"My visit to Africa is called to open the door for Kazakhstan companies to enter the African markets, where, I'm sure, they can find good niches," the Foreign Ministry's press-service quotes Idrissov as saying after his official visit to Ethiopia.

The Kazakhstan Minister visited the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. On November 14, 2013 Kazakhstan obtained an Observer status in this union after ratifying the required treaties in May 2013. Foreign Minister Yerlan Idrissov became the Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan in the African Union.

Idrissov called the African nations to take an active part in the EXPO-2017 and support Kazakhstan's bid to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2017-2018.

The Minister stressed good prospects of cooperation with Kazakhstan in the fields like agriculture, mining, chemistry, oil and gas and education. He pointed out that Africa is a continent of opportunities that is actively used by economic giants like China, India and Western countries.

During the meeting with Ethiopian Prime-Minister Hailemariam Desalegn the diplomats agreed that establishment of direct contacts between businessmen of the two countries would help expand the mutual trade, and discussed cooperation in personnel training and students exchange.

The Kazakhstan Minister informed PM Desalegn about the scheduled opening of the Kazakhstan Embassy in Addis Ababa next year, and expressed hope that the Ethiopian administration would support Kazakhstan's plans to use Ethiopia as a door to Africa.

Then Kazakhstan's Foreign Minister had a meeting with Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome.

Mulatu Teshome used to be Ambassador of Ethiopia to Kazakhstan at some point in his career. According to the Temoshe, he feels "special emotional connection" to Kazakhstan.

The Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan told the Ethiopian President about Kazakhstan's participation in construction of the railway that will soon be able to deliver Kazakh cargos to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. The port is separated from Djibouti port used for Ethiopian business by only a small section of the sea.

The Kazakhstan diplomat also met with his Ethiopian counterpart Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. They agreed to consider establishing an intergovernmental commission for trade and economic interaction, forming a business board and signing agreements to avoid double taxation, ensure mutual protection of investments and other documents.

Yerlan Idrissov also had a meeting with Kinfe Dagnew, General Director of Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC) to discuss expansion of contacts between the countries' companies. METEC is the key state-owned holdings of Ethiopia that operates in 15 different sectors and owns more than 100 manufacturing venues of strategic nature, the press-service pointed out.
