Kazakhstan and U.S. agree to cooperate in reduction of emissions

Kazakhstan and the U.S. have agreed to cooperate in reduction of emissions, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the press-service of Kazakhstan Ministry of Environmental Protection.

The memorandum of understanding on cooperation in expansion of capacities for development of an emissions reduction strategy has been signed between Kazakhstan Ministry of Environmental protection and the U.S. Government during the first meeting of Kazakhstan-American Commission on Scientific-Technical Cooperation. The memorandum is aimed at interaction in promotion of low-carbon development. According to the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan, the document provides for joint work of the two countries for sustainable development amid the climate changes.

Prior to signing of the document, Kazakhstan Minister of Environmental Protection Nurlan Kapparov met with Kerri-Ann Jones, Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs of the United States.

The meeting of Kazakhstan-American Commission resulted in creation of three work groups for priority directions: biomedical research, green chemistry and natural resources management. The work groups have defined common interests and methods of enhancement of interaction between the two countries in science in line with the global standards.

The participants also discussed policies and best practices of stimulation of innovations and creating jobs in both countries.

The Agreement on Scientific-Technical Cooperation between Kazakhstan and the U.S. was signed during Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s visit to the U.S. in 2010. The document provides for cooperation in different sectors, such as innovations, education, healthcare, biotechnologies, alternative energy, seismic research, information technologies, environmental protection, and improvement of water-energy and food security.
