The joint use of Baikonur cosmodrome rented by Russia from Kazakhstan has to be reviewed, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports citing head of the Federal Space Agency (Roskosmos) Vladimir Popovkin.

According to him, the “cost of Baikonur rent will not change and will remain at $115 million per year; the basic principles and the contractual base will also remain the same”.

“Nothing has changed yet. Baikonur cosmodrome is currently rented out. The rental agreement was signed until 2050. But the contract was signed in 1994 and the relations between Russia and Kazakhstan have been modernized since then, e.g. the Eternal Friendship Treaty has been signed,” Popovkin said.

According to him, “it is necessary to take a new look at the cosmodrome”. “In line with the decrees of the presidents of Russia and Kazakhstan, the inter-government commission was instructed to work out the road map. It will basically contain the necessary modifications of the existing agreements to more efficiently use launching and technical complexes of the cosmodrome,” Popovkin said.
