Kazakhstan and Madagascar Foreign Ministers discussed cooperation in Astana

Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Yerlan Idrissov met with his colleague from Madagascar Pierrot Jocelyn Rajaonarivelo in Astana, Tengrinews.kz reports. The meeting was timed to the 20th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. During the meeting the Ministers discussed perspective directions of bilateral cooperation between Kazakhstan and Madagascar, as well as interaction within international organizations. Speaking of the current situation in several countries of the African continent, Yerlan Idrissov stated that "Kazakhstan welcomes the efforts of the UN and the African Union aimed at settling the conflicts in several African countries", noting Astana's interest in restoration of peace and saving the unity. "This is the first visit of Foreign Mister of Madagascar Pierrot Jocelyn Rajaonarivelo to Kazakhstan. Of course, we could not cover all issues that are of interest to us, but it was a useful acquaintance. Madagascar is currently at the stage of growth. We hope that the processes of national establishment and political stabilization will be successfully completed in Madagascar. We wish them luck in the next year's presidential and parilamentary elections in Madagascar," Yerlan Idrissov said. Speaking of establishment of trade and economic cooperation, the head of Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry informed his colleague that "the African continent is interesting in terms of Kazakhstan's investments into its strategic facilities". During the meeting Yerlan Idrissov presented Astana as a candidate for hosting the International Specialized Exhibition EXPO-2017. The ministers also reached an agreement on exchange of information between Foreign Ministries of the two countries. The meeting ended in signing a memorandum of understanding between Kazakhstan and Madagascar. "On behalf of the President, temporary government, Prime-Minister and on behalf of the people of Madagascar, I would like to express a huge gratitude to you for your warm welcome and support that you have rendered to Madagascar. This is our first time in Kazakhstan, in the country that is for us an example of democracy and development. We would like to take your democratic development and skills as a basis for our country. We share common values and value unity of our people; we also want to reach independence without forgetting to restore neighborly and friendly relations with other countries. Our nation has Asian and African roots, that's why Madagascar is considered a bridge between Asia and Africa. That's why we want to establish good relations with Asian countries and especially with such a developed country like Kazakhstan," Madagascar Foreign Minister Pierrot Jocelyn Rajaonarivelo said. Kazakhstan Foreign Minister also noted that diplomatic relations between Kazakhstan and Madagascar were established on April 10, 1992, via an exchange of notes. He also stated that Madagascar Foreign Minister will meet with Kazakhstan Agriculture Minister Assylzhan Mamytbekov and Minister of Economic Development and Trade Yerbolat Dossayev. Pierrot Jocelyn Rajaonarivelo was born in 1945 on the island of Sainte-Marie, Analanjirofo Region. He holds Master's degrees in public rights and political science. He started his career in 1972 as head of the UN economic mission in the permanent representative office of Madagascar in New York. In different years he worked in Madagascar Foreign Ministry: Ambassador to the U.S. (1989-1997), Vice-PM on budget and decentralization (1997-2002). He used to be a refugee in France in 2002-2009. In 2010 he founded a Madagascar democratic movement. In 2011 (April-October) he served as Vice-President and Minister of Economy and Industry. On November 2011 he was appointed Madagascar Foreign Minister.
