From the perspective of financial instruments, China has more chances to win the Central Asian market than Russia that is currently discussing creation of the Common Economic Space (CES) with several CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries, Director of the Risk Assesment Group, political scientist Dossym Satapayev told Tengrinews.kz. “The battle for Central Asia (CA) is already not with the U.S. but with China. Considering financial instruments, the Celestial has more chances to influence CA and attract the ruling regimes, as China makes larger investments compared to Russia. Of course, these investments are extended at a certain profitable interest rates and under quite harsh conditions, but they are available,” political analyst said noting that Russia will use the Customs Union (CU) as a leverage in this competition. According to Satpayev, each of the three countries has a different view on the CES and CU. Both Kazakhstan President and state officials have been saying for a long time that the Customs Union is an economic project for Kazakhstan. That means that Kazakhstan is focusing on its economic implication for the country, even though the benefits are quite doubtful, Satpayev said. Russia from Putin's angle sees the CU as a geopolitical project that could help it compete with the West and the Asian countries led by China. According to Satpayev, Russia openly states its readiness to become a mediator between the EurAsEC and Europe, and become the center for uniting efforts of other countries that want to enter the CU, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
