Kazakhstan’s Central Election Committee (CEC) is waiting for the resolution to be taken by the Constitutional Council with regards to the ballot in Zhanaozen, Tengrinews.kz reports. Earlier President Nazarbayev had vetoed the Constitutional Council’s decision to ban Zhanaozen from voting following the situation-of-emergency announced after the public unrest December 16.

“I cannot comment on the decision [taken by the President to veto the Constitutional Council’s ruling]. Our further actions will depend on the ultimate decision to be taken by the Constitutional Council”, Mr. Kuandyk Turgankulov, CEC Head, announced January 10.

January 4 the situation-of-emergency was prolonged in Zhanaozen till the end of the month. January 6 the Constitutional Council announced the vote shouldn’t be held in Zhanaozen given the state of emergency. Today Head of State has vetoed the Constitutional Council’s decision.
