Austria's Pirate party makes electoral debut

17 april 2012, 14:01
Austria's Pirate party made its electoral debut Sunday following a breakthrough by its German counterpart, winning 3.8 percent of the vote and a municipal seat at Innsbruck's local polls, AFP reports.

The Austrian Pirates, who held their first general assembly in Vienna on April 1, espouse the same policies as their fellow Pirates in Germany and elsewhere: democracy via the Internet, political transparency, a greater role for ordinary citizens and equal access to culture, education and information.

The Pirate party is planning to put up candidates for Austria's upcoming regional and legislative elections next year, hoping for a similar effect as their German counterparts on the political scene.

In Germany, the Pirates already have seats in two regional parliaments, and are tipped to win up to 11 percent of the vote in next year's legislative elections, vying with the Greens for third place.

Last week, members of parties from over 20 countries met in Prague under a broad "Pirate" umbrella.

During the two-day meeting, 200 representatives of Pirate Parties International sought ways to increase their representation in the European parliament from the two seats held currently by Amelia Andersdotter and Christian Engstroem from Sweden.

The Pirates movement, and its first party, the Swedish Piratpartiet, were founded by Swede Rickard Falkvinge in 2006.
