Aktobe agglomeration to max out at 1.3 million citizens

The urban agglomeration of Aktobe in western Kazakhstan can allow no more than 1.3 million people, Tengrinews reports citing the Ministry of Economy and Budget Planning of Kazakhstan.

“According to the estimates, the demographic capacity of the Aktobe agglomeration is 1.3 million people. It is the maximum number of citizens whose needs can be met by the means of local resources without harming the environment of the region,” the Ministry reported.

The President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has earlier named Aktobe one of the future urban centers of the country. The Head of the State noted that the city, along with Astana, Almaty and Shymkent, would be developed into an urban agglomeration of Kazakhstan.

The Ministry has already outlined a plan for the development of Aktobe agglomeration till 2020 and defined the zones of influence. In accordance with the Ministry’s plan, Aktobe agglomeration includes the center - Aktobe city - with a population of 427 thousand people, five rural districts, towns of Alga, Khromtau, Kandyagash, and several villages in Algyn, Mugalzhar, Martuk, Khromtau and Kargaly districts with a total population of 541 thousand people.

The Ministry added that the Aktobe agglomeration would be developing in several directions. “The development of the Aktobe agglomeration area will include advancing the territorial set up and the economic positioning, development of integrated social infrastructure, recovery of the environment,” the Ministry concluded.
