Tangerines, bananas, pomegranates, fig tree and even coffee are grown in the underground greenhouse in Ust-Kamenagorsk. The Zemlyanie family has built the greenhouse at a depth of almost three meters, Tengrinews reports referring to YK-news.kz.

“My husband and son-in-law have built a thousand square meter greenhouse complex themselves. They have adjusted the light and the heating. We hired coal heavers to keep the temperature at the same level of 16-17 degrees all year around. Now the heating is working all day long. Above there is a glass roof that permits the natural light in,” the owner Lyudmila Zemlyanaya said.

The greenhouse consists of four 35-meter long blocks. One of such corridors is planted with lemon trees. “Last year we sold more than a ton of lemons. It does not include what we have left for ourselves, gave away to relatives, friends and acquaintances,” Zemlyanaya noted.

The owners themselves do not know the exact number of plants in the greenhouse. Lyudmila said that she has been planning to start a grand plant census with her daughter. But they are too busy and do not have time for it.

People interested in agriculture form Almaty, Taldykorgan, Karaganda and other cities have travelled to Ust-Kamenogorsk to see the self-made greenhouse.

Many locals seeing lemons on the counter think that those are exported Chinese fruits. Few know that the lemons were grown in the local underground greenhouse with love and care, no pesticides added.
