Hillary Clinton, widely expected to run for the US presidency in 2016, had a grandmotherly glow Thursday as she encouraged women to take risks -- even if it ends in failure, AFP repors.

"I believe together we can open the doors to full participation and shared prosperity, we can reach parity and equality and opportunity for all," Clinton told the audience at a women's real estate convention in Miami Beach, Florida.

"That is the kind of country I want my granddaughter to grow up in," she added, referring to her daughter Chelsea's baby Charlotte, who was born last week.

The former secretary of state, who often speaks on women's issues, said it was vital that women take chances in life.

"I cannot tell you how important it is for women like us... to model that risk-taking, to get out of our own comfort zones, to be willing to fail," she said.

"When I decided to run for president in '07 I knew it was a risk, and I knew it would be difficult."

Clinton lost out to Barack Obama for the Democratic Party nomination but is widely anticipated to run again.

Clinton said she would be giving her granddaughter three pieces of advice: "Do the best you can in everything you do," "Be kind," and "Find something you are passionate about, that you love to do, and again pursue it."

She did not mention the 2016 presidency, though she has previously said she expects to make a decision by early next year.

Clinton was later due at a signing for her book "Hard Choices," recounting her experiences as secretary of state.
