Stage four

The fourth stage of Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge-2013 finished on April 10. The participants of the rally drove through 266km of special section.

Kazakhstan crew of Denis Berezovskiy and Aleksei Nikizhev finished the race in the 16th place and retained their first line among T2 class cars. The Off Road Kazakhstan crew covered the distance in 5 hours 23 minutes and 55 seconds. “It was hot, it was the longest day. We had to change two tires and lost a little over 20 minutes. One tire was lost to low pressure in sands and the second one got torn somewhere in the bushes. In general, everything went well. We did not give up our positions. We have remained first in our class. Tomorrow is the last day,” Berezovskiy said.

Speaking about the last stage of the race Aleksei Nikizhev said: “Tomorrow we’ll have to drive through 266km. We start straight from the bivouac, finish not far from Abu Dhabi and go straight to the podium. According to the roadbook, the stage is quite fast. I don’t think it will be very difficult but we will keep fighting.”

Kanat Shagirov and Aleksander Moroz finished the race at the 31st place. They were fined with additional time for failing to pass several checkpoint when their gearbox got stuck. “The gearbox got stuck and we lost the reverse gear. So we had to withdraw from the special section but we still finished the race. We passed all the checkpoints except for 14 intermediate ones. But we got to the finish. We are now in the bivouac and the mechanics are dealing with the car so that it is going to be ready by tomorrow,” navigator Aleksander Moroz said.

Pilot Kanat Shagirov added: “We got to the dunes and got stuck a little. We started driving on reverse gear and the gearbox switched off under the load. We tried to switch it back on but nothing helped. We moved forward slowly. The gearbox started switching but at the speed of about 5km it got stuck and we had do make it to the finish driving only using the first gear. The finish was registered. We received some penalty time. There is still hope and I think our mechanics will sort everything out. We are in competitive mood. Go, go, go!”
