The qualification round of Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge-2013 was held on April 6 to define the starting positions for the first special section.

The organizers first explained the rules of behavior in the sands to the racers. For example, if a racer kills a camel with his car it is considered a crime. A penalty of 390 Euro is imposed for throwing garbage. The organizers promised that a helicopter with doctors would arrive at any section of the race within 15 minutes in case of an accident and the race could be postponed because of bad flying conditions.

Kazakhstan racer Aleksander Linnik who is taking part in the race on a quad - this is the first time Kazakhstan is represented in quads class in a race of this scale - covered the 2km distance in 2 minutes and 4.1 seconds. His result was 41st.

The first special section of Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge-2013 race was canceled for bikes and quads. The organizers made such decision fearing for their safety.

The offroader crews started the race at 03:30 p.m. Astana time because of the sand storm that canceled the bikes and quads. The length of the first special section was slashed by one third and made around 200km.

A heavy rain occurred in Abu-Dhabi the day before the race. It was followed by the sand storm in the race's area. As a result, the rescue helicopter could not takeoff and the organizers could not allow the participants to start the first special section.

"We passed everything almost without problems. There were minor issues will electronics," Abykayev said after the stage. Berezovskiy said they lost some time due to lack of speed: "The car was slower because of the tyre pressure. We had to lower the pressure at one point. We got entangled into the sand 30km from the finish line, but only for 7 minutes.
All the rest was excellent."

Berezovskiy noted before the stage that the competition was strong at the race and it would be difficult to get into Top-10.

The third Kazakhstan crew was less successful. The sand trap took lots of time of Shagirov and Moroz. But the racers are still positive about their prospects. "We got into a sand trap. We lost track of time when we were digging out the car. But the race feels good," Moroz said. The racers asked their maintenance team to check the car after the race. According to Shagirov, "everything is good with the car, but it needs to be checked".

Chinese journalists asked the pilot of Off Road Kazahkstan team Zhanat Zhalimbetov what was his way to deal with difficulties. "We eat a little and drink a lot," Zhalimbetov said. He also added that it would have been more difficult and better for everyone if the weather was hotter: "It is chilly for us". It was only 30 above zero in Abu Dhabi, which is a very low temperature for the city.
