Kazakhstan figure skater Denis Ten who won the first World Cup silver medal in the history of Kazakhstan told the journalists about keeping his word.

It turned out that when he won his first medal at the Junior Grand Prix in Belarus, one highly-respectable person came up to him and said that “the tournament was won by a sportsman from nonexistent country”. “Back then I was so angry and promised that I would do my best to make Kazakhstan known in the world, so that our country is respected among all figure skaters. And it was a special day for me when I was awarded at the world cup,” Ten said.

The Kazakhstan skater also noted that it was hard for him to overcome the psychological barrier and skate his program after several unsuccessful performances. “My coach always said that the world cup was our ultimate goal. Despite of all the failures in this season, he has always believed in me. I was ready for the championship more than ever,” the sportsman said.

“To be honest, I have fully changed my life, work and trainings schedule, and even the diet after the Four Continents Championships. Frank (Caroll) and me were very serious about every minute of trainings. It was tough to overcome the barrier. If one tells you that you are ugly every day, you will anyway consider yourself ugly, no matter how handsome you are. I always cite the fragment from The Old Man and the Sea: A man can be destroyed but not defeated. After each failure I learned from my mistakes and toughened my character,” Ten said.

His total points were 266.48 and put him in the second place overall, only a little over 1 point away from the gold. He yielded the first place to three-time world champion Canadian figure skater Patrick Chan, who scored 267.78 points. Spanish figure skater Javier Fernandez scored 249.06 points and became third.

The Olympic champion Yevgeniy Plyushenko said that Denis Ten was better than Patrick Chan and famous American journalist Monica Friedlander started collecting signatures for a petition calling to award the gold medal to Ten.

Kazakhstan Figure Skating Federation said that it would not appeal the results. Denis Ten was also happy with the results noting that “it would have been accidental” if he won the worlds, while silver medal was something he altually earned and deserved. “I cannot comment on this situation. My job is to skate well. I think that silver is remarkable for our country,” Ten said. The sportsman, however, stated the he would accept the gold, if it is transferred to him.

On March 26 Denis Ten met with Almaty Akim (Mayor) Akhmetzhan Yessimov and the Akim passed a monetary prize of the unknown amount to the sportsman. “The meeting with Akim inspired me. Hearing such pleasant words from the Akim is worth a lot. I was told that I now have a chance to become an honored master of sports, but I haven't received the title yet,” Ten said.
