The 4th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions was held on May 30-31 in Astana. The forum gathered religious leaders of different confessions from 40 countries.

Here are some of the key quotes from the speeches of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev and representatives of different confessions:

ISLAM

Nursultan Nazarbayev protected Islam at the Congress.

"Islam is a massive and growing layer of the cultural and material human heritage. The present and future global community cannot be pictured without Islam. Any attempts to obstruct Islam are short-sighted and even dangerous."

UNIQUE FORMULA

Kazakhstan President talked about the way people of different religions and cultures live peacefully in Kazakhstan.

"We have worked out a unique formula of the national unity and accord of all Kazakhstan citizens, regardless of their religious, ethnic and cultural appurtenance."

RELIGIOUS DIALOG

Nursultan Nazarbayev stressed the importance and relevance of the dialog for enhancing the role of the peace-making efforts of the religious and spiritual leaders.

"The thesis on unrelieved differences and disputes between the religions is only a phantom. Religious do not fight between each other; these are people, states and politicians fighting. World’s great minds tag the religion the formula of morals. The highest meaning of any beliefs is in getting people and the humanity back on the path of lost perfection."

NEW UN

Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel Shlomo Moshe Amar spoke of the importance of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions.

"Great President Nursultan Nazarbayev has created a new Organization of the United Nations. But this organization unites not only people, but also the religions and the people practicing different religions and meanings, different opinions, different cultural approaches and different lifestyles, because the great President has managed to gather such unexpected and such a different people at one table. And these people are sitting, speaking and listening to each other. This gives hope for a peaceful world."

A GUIDING STAR

Sephardi Chief Rabbi believes that Kazakhstan people have succeeded in breaking the obstructions hindering the common property dialog.

“And this is an important example for the humanity. This is the lighthouse, the guiding star showing everyone how to live and establish inter-confessional peace. All the religious leaders have to follow this example, no matter where they live and what religions they preach."

BLACK SHEEP

Head of the U.S. National Council of Churches Leonid Kishkovsky condemned the behavior of pastor Terry Jones who publicly burnt the Koran twice.

"This is a very important lesson, I think, for every society and every country. There is a black sheep in every flock, in every country. It is important that responsible people openly call for truth, compassion and mutual understanding in reply to something ugly."

PEACE MODEL

Nursultan Nazarbayev told how Kazakhstan created its own model of inter-ethnic accord.

"An effective model of peace and accord is one of the foundations of the successful development of our country. Independent Kazakhstan is the country with 140 ethnic groups living in peace and accord... We have created our own model of inter-ethnic accord. Kazakhstan citizen of any ethnic group and religion is an equal-righted citizen and an integral part of the common civil society. We are creating conditions for every person to exercise his religion, learn and practice the language, culture and traditions of his ethnic group.”

MISUSE OF INVENTIONS

Kazakhstan President told how advanced information technologies called to unite people frequently disunite them instead.

"As it has happened several times in the past, the humanity does not always use the new inventions given to it by the Higher Reason for good purposes... Moral braces of any society are disrupted: the family, children raising traditions, generations succession and many others. This is a bitter reality of the modern world...Peace and accord have never been is such a demand in the global history of the humankind."

CRISIS OF MORAL VALUES

Nursultan Nazarbayev talked about the impending global crisis of moral values.

"The global crisis of moral values is impending. It is obvious how many societies propagate and inoculate pseudo freedoms. They try to promote perverted views on the nature of human relations and imprint them as the standards of the modern society; and motivation towards honest labor is replaced with aspiration for fast gain through any means. Such anti-morality is frequently elevated to the absolute."

FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN NATIONS

Former Prime-Minister of Canada Jean Chretien and Kirill Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia talked about the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions at the meetings with Nursultan Nazarbayev.

"Such meetings are necessary not only for ensuring stability and peace in the country, but also for establishing friendship between nations. In my opinion, the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions is very helpful and highly important amid the current fast-moving globalization.”

IMMUNITY FROM SELF-DESTRUCTION

Nazarbayev suggested to inoculate young people with immunity from moral self-destruction.

"We need to stop the spread of the spiritual vacuum and overcome the threat of the crisis of human morals. I consider nurturing of high spirituality of our young people and inoculating them with immunity to moral self-destruction a priority. The value of meaningful measures on strengthening of family traditions and the role of women in the society and families is also very high."
