The last days of December and first days of January are traditionally the time to sum up the results of the expiring year. Tengrinews.kz summarized the main 2011 sports events. The rating is based on the number of views and comments of sport-related articles at Tengrinews.kz website.
Kazakhstan alpinists Maksut Zhumayev and Vassiliy Pivtsov reached the top of K2, the most dangerous mountain in the world. The expedition that consisted of Kazakhstan, Argentinean, Austrian, German and Polish alpinists lasted for more than two months and finished on August 23. The alpinists had to overcome a lot of obstacles, including loss of a truck with gear, stone avalanche that showered their camp, descent of mudflows, storms and snow flurries. By reaching the K2 top Zhumayev and Pivtsov have finished Kazakhstan at All 14 Eight-Thousanders program. Zhumayev and Pivtsov have ascended all 14 eigth-thousanders of the world without oxygen.

9. Hello, the Big League!
Kazakhstan National Hockey Team won gold in the first division of World Championship and so qualified to participate in the main group in the 2012 World Championship. Under Andrey Khomutov's guidance the hockey players gained victory over the Ukrainian team 3:2 in the final match of the competition. is not known yet known who will lead Kazakhstan team in 2012. Khomutov was dismissed as a head coach of Barys club that is the main club of national team. The decision on the national team will be made in the nearest future.

8. A disastrous debut
The first British coach entered Kazakhstan football and made a stir in the media in June this year. The goal to shape the team for successful performance in 2011/2012 season was set for John Gregori, the new coach of Almaty football team called Kairat. However Kairat haven’t fought for high awards this season. With Gregori's fulfillment of the task Kairat moved down several lines and dropped out of the country’s highest division altogether. However, the team returned to the division owing to the sponsors.

7. Winning without a fight
Almaty was chosen to host the 2017 Winter Universiade. It became known in the end of November. Italian Trentino was also a candidate to host the Universiade. However, Almaty’s rival withdrew from the list of claimants because of a tough economical situation a few days before announcement of the results. Almaty city got the right to host the Universiade without a fight. Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov promised to make the competition the best in its history.
6. He’s fallen down but then stood up
Alexandre Vinokourov, leader of Kazakhstan Astana cycling team fell down in a ditch and broke his leg during one of the stages of multi-day Tour de France race. The cyclist announced termination of his sport career after the injury. This step would have caused Kazakhstan to loose one of its London Olympic Games spots and Vinokourov decided to stay for one more season. He even rode in French Chrono des Nations, the final race of the season and came 27th overall.

5. Getting to the gold
Karaganda Shakhter (Miner) football team won the first gold in Kazakhstan football premier league in the history of its existence. For more than half of the season the club was yielding the victory to Taldykorgan's Zhetissu team. However Shakhter won over Zhetissu 2:0. Then they gained the first place in a home match against Astana football team. As the result Zhetissu came in second and Aktobe football team was third.

4. The strongest in Asia
Kazakhstan national team became first in the overall standing in the Winter Asian Games that were held in Astana and Almaty. The national team won 70 medals, including 32 highest awards. Kazakhstan sportsmen were ahead of South Korean and Japanese teams. Kazakhstan team won the most number of medals in biathlon and ski orientation. International experts have highly appreciated the organizational level of competition in Kazakhstan.

3. Karateka football player
Kairat and Locomotive suddenly had their reserve football players out on the field at the 93rd minute into the match in Kazakhstan Football Championship. Arman Massimzhanov, 19-y.o. Kairat football player, jumped and kicked Locomotive football player in the back with both legs. Kazakhstan Football Federation Control and Disciplinary Committee disqualified Massimzhanov for life. However, the term of penalty has been reduced to three years later on. The video of the fight entered the British Daily Mail Top-Ten of sport videos.
2. The single victory
Kazakhstan national football team won over Azerbaijan team 2:1 in 2012 Championship of Europe qualification round match that was held on June 3 in Astana. Sergey Gridin, national football team player scored two goals during the match. It was the only victory of Kazakhstan team during the qualification round. The football players guided by Miroslav Beranek gained four points and the last place in the A group, where Germany, Turkey, Austria and Belgium competed as well.

1. Three-time world champion
Kyzyl-Orda sportsman Ilya Ilyin became the winner of Paris World Weightlifting Championship. Ilyin lifted 407 kilos in two exercises. Ukrainian Artem Ivanov won silver and Iranian Said Mohammadpur Karkara gained the bronze medal. It was the second gold medal Kazakhstan won in the Chamionship. Kazakhstan Zulfiya Chinshanlo won the first gold.
