 2011 was full of political, cultural and sports events. The coming year is likely to offer even more bright moments. Tengrinews.kz made a list of the most expected events of 2012.


The Majilis elections
The Majilis elections will become the main event of January. At least 70 percent of Kazakhstan residents are expected to vote on January 15. It is possible that Kazakhstan government would resign after the elections.

Trial of the murderer of Kirill Denyakin

U.S. police officer Steven D. Rankin shot 26-year-old Karaganda citizen Kirill Denyakin dead nailing him with 11 bullets for knocking on a friend's door drunk. Acrtivists of Bolashak movement even sent a letter to Barack Obama asking for a detailed investigation of the murder. There is still no information if the police officer was arrested. Denyakin’s family will go to the U.S. to attend the court hearings.

Court hearings of Ablyazov’s case 

Another high-profile case is expected to be closed next year. The case of Mukhtar Ablyazov is being heard in the High Court of England. Ablyazov served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of BTA Bank from 2005 to 2009. He is accused of misappropriation of the bank's assets during his tenure at BTA Bank. He fled from Kazakhstan immediately after initiation of the case in 2009. BTA Bank launched legal proceedings against him in the UK High Court shortly after his arrival in London as a part of its restructuring agreement with creditors to recover assets allegedly misappropriated by Ablyazov.
Since August 2009 the High Court in London has found sufficient cause to freeze Ablyazov’s assets and confiscate his passport. Ablyazov is the subject of seven legal claims in the English High Court totaling $3.7 billion.

The London 2012 Olympics 

The Olympics will start in London next summer. Kazakhstan weightlifter Ilya Ilyin is confident of his victory. He won gold in World Championship in Paris. Kyzylorda authorities are promising good remuneration to sportsmen for winning in the Olympics. Tennis-player Galina Voskoboyeva is planning to get into the top 3 at the summer Olympics. Kazakhstan Minister of Tourism and Sport Talgat Yermegiyayev said that Kazakhstan was expecting to be 28th overall at the Olympics in London. He promised $250 thousand to each Kazakhstan sportsman who wins a gold medal.

Kazakhstan sportsmen at Dakar rally

Astana team will participate in trucks class at Dakar-2012. Arthur Ardavichus will be heading the team for the second time. Prior to the race the sportsman said that Kazakhstan team is planning to get into top 20 of the race. Denis Berezovskiy’s crew will take part in the off-road cars class of Dakar for the first time. The race will start on January 1 in Buenos-Aires, Argentina, and will finish on January 15 in Lima, Peru.

iPhone 5, Windows 8 and iPad 3

Launch of iPhone 5, Windows 8 and iPad 3 will be the most expected events of the year for fans of new gadgets and technologies. The launch of iPad 3 might be timed to the birthday of Steve Jobs on February 24. iPhone 4S was presented in 2011. Steve Jobs died after presentation of the new phone. The company will present its new product in 2012 without him.

Global financial crisis 

Kazakhstan is ready for the next wave of the crisis, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Kairat Kelimbetov said. He reminded that Kazakhstan has a successful experience of stimulating sectors of its economy during the previous crisis. Besides the possible financial crisis, the world is expecting a possible collapse of the Eurozone in 2012. It is too early to forecast its effect on Kazakhstan. Besides, Kazakhstan will enter the WTO after successful negotiations with Argentina and Saudi Arabia.

Ban on import of cars from the U.S. to the Customs Union 


Ban on import of cars from the U.S. to the Customs Union (Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan) may have an effect on Kazakhstan residents. The ban will come in effect after inauguration of a new president of Russia.

The End of Days

Apocalypse is also among the most expected events of the year. It was predicted several years ago. There were several versions of extinction of life on the Earth. They ranged from the fall of a cosmic body to volcanoes, floods and aliens invasion. Other reasons wiping the humans from the face of the Earth were euphoria, vacuum dissimilation, end of time, mega-tsunami, black holes and aggressive invaders. Movies were made about Apocalypse. 2012 and The End of Days are the most popular.
