Kazakhstan is considering construction of a possible nuclear power plant in the South of Kazakhstan, KazTag Agency reports, citing Timur Zhantikin, Head of the Nuclear Industry Committee within the Ministry of Industry and New Technology. “A research is under way to define locations of nuclear power sources (…) The first possible option is Balkhash Lake, another option is the South Kazakhstan hydropower unit in the energy-hungry southern part of the country. And the third possible option is the West of Kazakhstan. From the perspective of the national power industry development, the optimum is the South Kazakhstan hydropower unit. There was once a feasibility study done”. “Currently we are working on the industry master plan before 2030. By 2030 approximately 4-4.5% of power should be generated by nuclear power stations”, he said. In 2011 Kazakhstan’s Government had adopted a program to develop the national nuclear industry. Development of the peaceful nuclear power is the only way to meet the growing demand for energy, President Nazarbayev said when speaking at the International Nuclear-Free World Forum in Astana October 12, 2011. Nazarbayev stressed that nuclear industry is one of the innovation forces, especially given that the nation holds about ¼ of the global uranium reserves. “We have all the nuclear power industry infrastructure and a huge scientific potential. And we ensure safety and security of all the peaceful nuclear power facilities”, he said.
