Kazakhstan’s banks are struggling to handle local companies’ orders for POS-terminals, Kapital.kz reports.

Earlier this year the Government introduced a range of liability for businesses unable to accept bank cards.

In particular, Halyk Bank officials say there are over 200 companies queuing to obtain a POS-terminal in Almaty [the country’s biggest city] alone. According to them, a POS-terminal can only be installed two months after an application is filed.

However, KazKom bank only offers to buy POS-terminals at $413. The bank charges a fee at 4% when handling transactions involving American Express and Diners Club cards, and 3% when handling any other cards.
According to the bank officials, “all the services related to installation of a POS-terminal, training of the personnel and further maintenance of the POS-terminal will be provided free of charge”.

Alliance Bank offers POS-terminals for free use. The bank charges 1% of all transactions involving its own cards and 3% when handling transactions involving cards issued by other banks.

Center Credit Bank officials said “there is a huge queue. There are no exceptions even for VIPs”. POS-terminals are installed free of charge. The charge is 1% for any transactions involving the bank’s cards and 1.5% for transactions involving cards issued by other banks

Subsidiary of the Russia’s Sberbank has no POS-terminals to offer, adding that some might be available late February or early March.

According to BTA officials, a POS-terminal can be installed three months after an application is filed. The fee stands at 2% for transactions involving the bank’s cards and 3% for any other cards.

Temirbank call center employees are not aware of when a new supply of POS-terminals will be available. “There are no POS-terminals available at the moment. They are provided on a free of charge basis. The bank charges 3% of any transaction. Plans are there to bring a new supply of POS-terminals this year. But no dates are known for sure”.
