Kazakhstan has expressed interest in exporting goods via the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad that will be launched sometime next year, Tengrinews reports, citing Interfax-Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan Ambassador in Azerbaijan Amangeldi Zhumabayev talked about the importance of the new railroad at the press conference in Baku on December 12. “It is very important for us to be able to export not only oil and gas, but other goods as well. The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad that will start operating next year will give us ample opportunities. According to our estimates, the volume of cargo transported via this railroad will amount to 16 million tons and we want to make sure we can be a part of that,” said Amangeldy Zhumabayev.

According to Mr. Zhumabayev, Kazakhstan plans to increase import of fruits and vegetables from Azerbaijan to its western regions.

“We are close to one another and as neighbors we should use our economic opportunities. We want to import more Azerbaijani fruits and vegetables. For that we made a concession to allocate land for companies that will build warehouses for storage of the fruits and vegetables,” Mr. Zhumabayev said.

The commodity turnover between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan amounted to $390 million in 2012. $60 million of which was accounted for by the imported Azerbaijani fruits and vegetables.

The Ambassador added that there were also plans of increasing the export of Kazakhstan grain to Azerbaijan. “Kazakhstan exports more than 1 million ton of grain to Azerbaijan every year. We intend to increase the amount. We are also interested in supplies of dairy products, fruits and vegetables for our western regions where the oil and gas production is the major activity,” said the Ambassador.

Kazakhstan’s membership in the Custom Union (of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan) should not pose any problems for the cooperation with Azerbaijan.

The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway also known as or Kars-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Baku railway is a new corridor that will connect Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey some time in 2014. The railroad is expected spur the trade among Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia and Central Asian countries.
