Kazakhstan raises grain harvest estimates

Kazakhstan plans to harvest 17-17.5 million tons of grain this year, The President’s Press Service reported August 5, quoting the Ministry of Agriculture. “According to the Ministry’s estimates, grain harvest is expected at 17-17.5 million tons, with 15 million of the figure being wheat”, the statements reads that was issued following the sitting of regional governors presided over by President Nazarbayev on Friday. According to President Nazarbayev, a total of $1.2 billion was earmarked out of the state budget to support the agriculture sector this year, including $376.7 million in subsidies and $116.4 million to launch food stabilization funds in country’s regions. Over 400 000 tons of fuel were provided at reduced prices to support the harvesting campaign. Anna Buts, Head of the Crop Farming Development Department of the country’s Agriculture Ministry, had told journalists July 25 that grain harvest in Kazakhstan was expected to reach 16-17 million tons. Anna Buts told journalists July 14 that Kazakhstan had exported 5.9 million tons of grain in the 2010-2011 marketing year. According to her, this figure included grain equivalent of exported flour (2.5 million tons). Ms. Buts elaborated that grain was traditionally exported to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan. According to the Government’s web-site, grain harvest in 2010 totaled 12.2 million tons (net weight). Grain harvest of 2009 made up 22.7 million tons (bunker weight).
