Kazakhstan Minister of Transport and Communications Berik Kamaliyev held a meeting on provision of the civil aviation with jet fuel and preparedness of the aircrafts for exploitation under ICAO III B standards at Almaty airport, KazTAG reports citing the ministry’s press-service.

ICAO Category III B is an standard on precision instrument approach and landing with: a decision height lower than 50 feet (15 m) above touchdown zone elevation, or no decision height (alert height); and a runway visual range less than 200 meters (660 ft) but not less than 75 meters (246 ft). Autopilot is used until taxi-speed. In the United States, FAA criteria for CAT III B runway visual range allows readings as low as 150 ft (46 m).

Introduction of ICAO III standards at Almaty airport is related to frequent fogs, storms and other weather conditions that disrupt regularity of the flights.

“Currently the situation with air fuel supply to civil aviation is complicated. As of January 6, there are 30.7 thousand tons of fuel remaining in the airports; 7.7 thousand tons out of them belong to Air Astana and 96 tons are the property of SCAT airline,” the press-service cited the Minister.

Kamaliyev stressed the necessity for urgent measures to supply the civil aviation with aviation fuel in required amounts and at reasonable prices. Besides, civil aviation commission was instructed to prepare a schedule of supplies of jet fuel to air companies and airports. The meeting was attended by representatives of Transport and Communications Ministry and Ministry of Oil and Gas, managers of KazMunaiGas, as well as representatives of air companies and airports.

According to the press-release, such meetings were held twice in 2011 and KazMunaiGas was instructed to distributed additional 12 thousand tons of air fuel between the main consumers: Air Astana, SCAT, airports of Astana, Almaty and Karaganda.
