Canada announced Friday fresh sanctions on Russia over its support for rebels in Ukraine, targeting 20 Russian politicians and Ukrainian separatist leaders as well as Russia's oil and gas sector, AFP reports.

This 13th round of sanctions in collaboration with allies comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin showed no willingness to change tack on Ukraine.

Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird insisted, however, that the West's stiffening sanctions are working.

"There is no doubt that collectively the sanctions have been effective," Baird told a press conference, vowing more will follow.

The new travel bans impact mostly members of the Russian State Duma, the Russian lower house of parliament, and ministers of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic in eastern Ukraine.

Ottawa also introduced restrictions on the export of technologies used in Arctic, as well as deep water and shale oil explorations and extraction to Russia.
