Kanat Nurmagambetov, the head of the Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, reported that the suspect is now in custody.
"In Almaty, during recent operational search activities, a 28-year-old pickpocket was arrested. He targeted passengers on public transport during rush hour, stealing mobile phones. Additionally, a buyer of the stolen phones, with whom the thief had an established connection for selling the stolen items, has also been apprehended. Fifteen phones have been confiscated. The suspect is currently in custody," Nurmagambetov stated.
Efforts by the criminal police since the beginning of the year have resulted in the arrest of 417 pickpockets nationwide, with 461 criminal cases initiated. The activities of 21 criminal groups have been disrupted, and 38 traveling thieves have been detained.
"The Ministry of Internal Affairs reminds that pickpocketing is punishable by up to three years in prison. To protect your belongings, we advise remaining vigilant and avoiding keeping valuables in easily accessible places," added the police colonel.
The police also released footage of suspects being detained with the involvement of special forces from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
