Kazakhstan will be constructing a nuclear power plant under international control, State Secretary Kanat Saudabayev stated at the International Nuclear-Free World Forum in Astana October 12, Bnews.kz reports. “There are some models of nuclear power plants, various layers of protection to fence off anthropogenic disasters. Each nation offering a certain model of a nuclear power plant has its own secrets. President said today that when it comes to constructing a nuclear power plant (…) the process should be over a maximum international control”, Saudabayev said. “Anthropogenic disasters at nuclear power stations should not hamper development of the industry. The issue is that to what extent the world is ready to get united to work out single criteria and exercise a single tough control”, Saudabayev said. “Kazakhstan is ready to construct its own nuclear power plant. It does not contradict with our strife for nuclear-free world”, Saudabayev emphasized. Nuclear power plants may emerge in Kazakhstan as early as within the following ten years, Sergey Yashin, KazAtomProm Nuclear Company Vice Chairman of the Board, had said speaking at the VI KAZENERGY international forum in Astana October 5, Bnews.kz reported. “Construction of nuclear power plants is seen not only as an additional source of power, but also as a major driving force of the industrial development: construction of such facilities calls for sophisticated technology. All this will contribute to development of adjacent industries”, he said at that time. He reminded that in 2011 Kazakhstan’s Government had adopted a program to develop the national nuclear industry.
