Astana supported UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon for his new term, Tengrinews.kz reports citing press-service of Kazakhstan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev sent Ban Ki Moon a telegram where he described the country's conceptual approach to further development of this universal organization and expressed his support to the nomination of its incumbent head for a new term,” the press-service writes.

Kazakhstan President noted “the central role of the UN in maintaining international peace and security, helping development, promoting observance of human rights and respect of international laws” and Ban Ki Moon's “significant personal contribution into development of our relations with the UN.” Nazarbayev wished success to Ban Ki Moon's efforts aimed at “increasing the UN's efficiency and enhancement of its capability to react to modern challenges and threats.”

According to the Foreign Ministry, the President highly appreciated the results of Ban Ki Moon's visit to Kazakhstan in April 2010.

"We consider your appeal to the global community to enhance efforts to attain the nuclear-free world that was made at the territory of the former Semipalatinsk nuclear test site as an acknowledgement of Kazakhstan's significant contribution into strengthening of nonproliferation and disarmament processes,” the press-services cited Nursultan Nazarbayev as saying.

Reminding of the coming 20th anniversary of shut-down of the nuclear polygon in eastern Kazakhstan, the President expressed his hope for support and participation of UN management in Kazakhstan's events timed to the anniversary.

“I am very pleased to support your decision to nominate yourself as a candidate for the second term as the UN Secretary-General,” Nazarbayev said in the end of his telegram.
