According to Swiss business-school The International Institute for Management Development (IMD), Kazakhstan is ranked 36th in the 2011 World Competitiveness Rankings, while Russia is 49th, Tengrinews.kz reports with a reference to IMD.

Top five countries in the list are Hong Kong, USA, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland. Great Britain and Japan are ranked 20th and 26th respectively. Among former Soviet countries, Kazakhstan is second after Estonia (33rd).

The ranking is based on criterions like state of the country's economy and infrastructure, efficiency of government and business.

In 2010 Kazakhstan was ranked 33rd, which was three ranks higher than in 2009. That time the strongest aspects of Kazakhstan economy were labor market, tax policy and budget expenses, while foreign trade, public health care, ecology and prices were the country's weakest points.
