Flower prices have roared upwards before the International Women’s Day in Kazakhstan, Madina Suleimen from one of the flower delivery firms told Tengrinews.kz.

She said that the suppliers bringing the flowers from Holland are to blame for the increase in prices. Madina Suleimen confirmed that men are now vigorously buying up all kinds of flowers, especially tulips and wild spring flowers to congratulate women on the coming holiday.

One rose now costs 1000 tenge (roughly $7) or more. One tulip costs 500 tenge ($3.5). Lilies are sold at 2000 tenge ($14) and up and chrysanths – at 700 tenge ($5). Tulips are traditionally viewed as a symbol of spring in Kazakhstan.

Internet flower shops have already posted the banners informing their costumers about the price spike. “Attention! During the period between March 1 and March 9 the cost of your purchase will make +25 from the prices indicated at the website,” they read.

The International Women’s Day is a legal public holiday in Kazakhstan. March 6, 7 and 8 are nonworking days in Kazakhstan.
