134 kilometers of Almaty roads are planned to be repaired and built in 2011, Tengrinews.kz reports.

More than 58 billion tenge ($400 million) were allocated for construction and maintenance of roads and for construction of subway.

260 kilometers of roads were repaired in 2010.

In 2011 local authorities are planning to build 2.2 km of the Eastern Bypass Road and to continue Momyshuly street from Raimbek to Akyn-Sara streets. The total of 25 kilometers of roads and 69 streets will be repaired in different parts of the city.

A new bridge will be built over Yessentai river along Kazybek bi street. The plan is to repair roads on Bokeikhanov street, Almaty-Kokpek-Chundzha-Koktal-Khorgoz roads and the road from Khaliullin street to the city border.

“We are planning to make the lesser Almaty hoist ring with a minimum number of traffic lights and turns; we will make more pedestrian crossings,” said Vladimir Merenkov, head of Almaty public transport and roads administration.

Five turn-around areas with recreation areas for bus drivers are going to be built at terminal points. Construction of two more bus stations funded by private investors is also scheduled.

Optimization of the city transport routes will be continued. “We instate new routes near the subway terminal stations so that people can walk out of the subway and catch a bus,” Merenkov said.
