Petropavlovsk city of northern Kazakhstan has started experimenting with remote court hearings via Skype, Tengrinews reports citing Channel 7.

The court has used Skype to remotely hold parol hearings of several convicts serving their sentences in a female penal colony. It was the first time it use Skype to hold hearings.

Seven hearings were held in three days in the colony. "When you are in a court room, you are all shaky and nervous looking at the judge who is deciding you fate. But today, I felt pretty calm," Assel, one of the convicts of the Penal Colony EC-164/3, said.

According to the Judge of the Petropavlovsk City Court Mikhail Gusev, such hearings help reduce costs and save on security and transportation expenditures of both the court and the colony. "Besides time, such (parole) hearings require additional arrangement expenditures. And practicing the online hearings greatly saves our budget," Gusev said.
