Hi-speed Internet will cover whole territory of Kazakhstan by 2015, Tengrinews.kz reports citing press-service of the Ministry of Communications and Information. The Ministry has its own Road map that involves development of broadband Internet access using WiMax and FTTH technologies, as well as CDMA-450, 3G and LTE. The size of Kazakhtan's territory makes covering the whole country a gargantuan undertaking: Kazakhstan is equal to the whole Western Europe by its size, but its population is only 16 million. “The Ministry is planning to provide all possible support to telecommunication operators to help them achieve the goals,” the press-service cited Minister of Communications and Information Askar Zhumagaliyev as saying. The plan is to provide broadband Internet access via 3G, WiMax and FTTH to all the populated areas (oblast or regional centers) and wireless technologies to areas with smaller population. "Implementation of broadband Internet access development projects will allow to provide the users with high-speed Internet complying with international standards by 2014,” the press-service cited the statement of the Chairman of KazakhTelecom Kuanyshbek Yessekeyev. As for the actual technical characteristics of the network, 100 Mbit/sec speed will be provided for Kazakhstan cities and 20 Mbit/sec for villages. This means that the actual average Internet access speed in cities will make 20 Mbit/sec and in villages it will make 10 Mbit/sec. “Starting from 2011 KazakhTelecom is planning to start construction of optical networks in Astana, Almaty and all large regional centers with the total capacity of 576 thousand ports. Implementation of the plans to develop the FTTH project will create the capacity necessary to provide Internet users with broadband Internet access at the speed of 100Mbit/sec in 2015,” the Ministry said. Modernization of the existing CDMA-450 network with EVDO technology is expected to provide broadband Internet access in villages at the speed of up to 0.5Mbit/sec providing connection to more than 80 thousand users. Wireless network development is considered as well.
