Akim (Governor) of Mangistau oblast Baurzhan Mukhamedzhanov stated that the region should not depend on the oil sector, Tengrinews.kz reports.

“We cannot be dependent of the oil sector,” the head of the western region of Kazakhstan said at the conference of Mangistau oblast branch of Nur Otan party. Mukhamedzhanov also noted that the oblast is working on diversification of the city's practically single-industry economy - oil and gas production.

“We have selected the following priority directions: development of onshore infrastructure, processing industry, transit transportation and tourism,” the Akim said.

Prospects and ways of development of these directions have already been reviewed at the meeting of the Security Council on development of the Pre-Caspian Region. In particular, Zhezkazgan-Beineu railroad and Beineu-Shetpe section of Atyrau-Aktau road are constructed for development of the transport logistics.

“We have submitted a suggestion to consider construction of a new direct 120km railroad Sai-Otes – Uzen. This will cut the distance towards Turkmenistan border by 285km for transit trains, unload Beineu-Mangyshlak section, cut rates on freights and increase competitiveness of Kazakhstan transportation,” Akim added.

Meanwhile, potential investors are interested in development of the shoreline for transshipment and transportation of cargoes: grain, coal, container freights, liquid gas and oil products, as well as development of the ferry business.

KazMunaiGas, KazMorTransFlot, TenizServis are interested in the non-oil production investment projects at the territory of Kuryk port.

Besides, 22 thousand jobs were created in Mangistau oblast in 2012 as part of implementation of the Employment Program-2020. According to the oblast Akim, additional jobs were created thanks to construction of new facilities at the territory of the oblast. These facilities include rural outpatient clinics, multi-apartment residential buildings, maternity hospitals, kindergartens, heating networks and boiler houses.

The plan is to complete construction of several hospitals and schools in 2013. This will create 1,000 more jobs by the end of 2012.
