Construction of toll roads in Kazakhstan is not very expensive compared to European countries, Tengrinews.kz is quoting Kazakhstan Prime-Minister Serik Akhmetov as saying.

“An agreement on Shymkent-Tashkent road was signed recently. There are, I think, 67km there. As for their calculations, I cannot even imagine such amounts. They put them in the cost estimates and the Finance Ministry signed them. According to them, 1km of the road costs $3.7 million. Are our chippings made of diamonds?” Senator Gani Kassymov asked Prime-Minister Akhmetov.

“I would like to say that our roads are not very expensive. For example, I can tell you that 1km of roads costs 8 to 10 million Euro in Finland. The price is about the same in Germany. It is understandable that they have higher salaries but, nevertheless, the roads we are currently building are expensive, they are expensive for the state budget. But we will continue constructing the roads in line with the transport strategy,” the Prime-Minister said.

He once again stressed the reasons for introduction of toll roads in Kazakhstan.

“Construction of roads, especially the ones of the first category, is always expensive. I can tell you that we have been building Astana-Borovoye road since 2006. Part of the road was made of concrete and the other part of bituminous concrete. It cost us around $2-3 million back then. So, make the calculations considering еру time and inflation,” Akhmetov told the deputies.

Astana-Borovoye autobahn became a toll road on May 31. Kazakhstan Ministry of Transport and Communications also proposed making several streets in Astana and Almaty toll roads. However, later head of the Road Commission said that there was no need for this, at least in Astana.
